Nichols Resigns as AXIS Re’s CEO; Ekberg Named Interim Head of Reinsurance

Bermuda-based AXIS Capital Holdings Ltd. announced that John “Jay” Nichols has resigned from his position as chief executive officer of AXIS Re. Nichols has agreed to remain with the company in a transitional role until March 31.

AXIS has named Jan Ekberg to succeed Nichols as interim CEO of AXIS Re. Ekberg, who has been with the company since 2004, currently serves as president and chief underwriting officer of AXIS Re Europe and will report directly to AXIS Capital President and Chief Executive Officer Albert Benchimol.

Chief Executive Officer Maurice “Hank” Greenberg admitted to taking part in two deals to make the insurer’s financial condition look better than it was as part of a $9.9 million settlement with New York that has dragged out for almost a dozen years, the state’s top lawyer said.
